UK Gyspsies & Travellers threatened by tory manifesto

7th of September 2010, Travellers’ eviction by bailiffs company Constant & Co, in Hovefields, Basildon, Essex. 7 Irish Travellers families were evicted from their own lands.

British journalist Bethany Holmes got in touch a few days ago to ask if she could use one of my images of Irish Travellers for a piece she was writing for Red Pepper on the threat of the tory manifesto for UK Gypsies and Travellers if the conservatives win the election today. Here is an extract from the manifesto:

‘We will tackle unauthorised traveller camps. We will give the police new powers to arrest and seize the property and vehicles of trespassers who set up unauthorised encampments, in order to protect our communities. We will make intentional trespass a criminal offence, and we will also give councils greater powers within the planning system.’

As if Gypsies & Travellers were not already enough discriminated against… So as it is election day, I just wanted to raise a little bit of awareness and share Beth’s article here. Please share if you can!
